Investment markets delivered mostly positive returns in April.

Inflation concerns were cast aside during the month of March as investors shifted their focus to the solvency and viability of the global banking system, following the collapse of several technology-focused banks in the US.

On Friday 10th March it was announced that US bank, Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), had collapsed which resulted in a flight to safety with investors selling equities and buying bonds and gold. The initial shock reminded investors of the 2008 Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and the fragility of the financial system.

Volatility in investment markets continued in February as bond yields once again rose, negatively impacting the prices of bonds and most equity markets. Inflationary pressures, while showing signs of slowing, remain elevated beyond the comfort levels of global central banks.

Equity markets surged in January, aided by falling bond yields resulting from lower-than expected US inflation data, along with optimism regarding the rapid re-opening of the Chinese economy as it unwound severe Covid-19 restrictions.
